How to Prepare Your Garage for an Epoxy Floor Installation

September 4, 2026| 5 min read| USA Concrete Co.

The professionals handle the grinding, repairs, and coating, but there are a few things you can do ahead of time to help an epoxy installation go smoothly. Here is a simple checklist for homeowners.

Clear the Space

Everything needs to come out of the garage: vehicles, shelving, bikes, tools, and stored boxes. The crew needs open floor from wall to wall, and anything left behind can be covered in dust from grinding. If you have a lot to move, plan a spot for it in the driveway or another room, and check the weather for the days your items will be outside.

Tell Your Installer About Stains and Spills

Oil and grease that have soaked deep into the slab can interfere with adhesion. Point out heavy stains so they can be treated or ground out before coating. It also helps to mention any past repairs, patches, or previous coatings, since old sealers and paint have to be removed.

Do a Simple Moisture Check

A quick homeowner test is to tape a piece of clear plastic, roughly two feet square, tightly to the bare floor and leave it for about a day. If you see moisture or a dark, damp patch under the plastic afterward, the slab may be moving vapor, and you should mention that to your installer. It is not a substitute for a professional assessment, but it is a useful early warning.

Think About Cracks and the Door Threshold

Cracks and control joints should be filled and leveled before coating. Also look at the area near the garage door, where water often collects and where coatings can be stressed. Mention any spot where water tends to pool so it can be addressed in the plan.

Plan for Time Without Your Garage

A typical single garage takes a few days from grinding to the final coat, and you will need to keep vehicles and heavy items out until the floor has cured. Ask for the exact timeline for the products your installer is using, and arrange parking in the meantime.
